Bio: Mukesh Chawla, PhD is the Sector Manager for the World Bank’s health program. He has worked extensively on issues related to health financing and health systems in many countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. His research and interventions examine the role of markets and market-like institutions in the creation of appropriate incentives for strengthening of the health systems and enhancing their capacity to deliver quality health services. Other areas of his interest include innovations in health financing, design of self-monitoring incentive compatible contracts for health providers, and health sector reforms. In his various positions at the Bank and at Harvard University School of Public Health earlier, he has advised senior policy makers in Poland, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Madagascar and Ethiopia on a wide range of policy interventions aimed at creating and strengthening fiscal discipline in health systems.
