Session: Disinvestment policy and practice

Room: Helsinki Hall
Time: Fri 11:45 AM-13:00 PM

Disinvestment policy and practice

Chair: Toni Ashton

Session Description

Over the past 40 years, academics, evaluators and policy-makers have made quite remarkable progress in the development and application of rational, evidence-based mechanisms for the allocation of health resources. While much of this progress has centred on mechanisms for commissioning new medical devices and pharmaceuticals, attention is increasingly turning towards development of mechanisms for decommissioning, disinvesting or redeploying resources from currently funded interventions. This organized session reviews current practice in disinvestment, suggests improvements to the available mechanisms for commissioning and decommissioning health interventions, and considers whether disinvestment of even ineffective interventions might be counter-productive under certain circumstances.
